International Winter festival “Hyperborea-2018”

                 Petrozavodsk, February 13-17, 2018

Annual Winter Festival “Hyperborea” takes place every February in Petrozavodsk. This time the Festival will consist of events familiar to citizens and visitors as well as of new, unique activities.

Translated from Greek, “Hyperborea” means “the land of people, living in the possessions of Northern wind”. Hyperborea was regarded by ancient Greeks as the country of happy and talented people protected by Apollo. According to some historians, the mysterious northern civilization was located in what is now Karelia and was stretching further to the Kola Peninsula.

The Festival “Hyperborea” includes the International Contest of Snow and Ice sculptures, snowballs figures show, fishermen tournament, snow kiting at the Onega lake, carnival etc. Pleasant emotions, new acquaintances and jolly pastime are guaranteed!

The Contest of Snow and Ice Sculptures will take place on February 13-17, 2018. The Contest has three nominations:

Ice sculpture

Snow sculpture (large cube)

Snow sculpture (small cube)

Professional and amateur teams of maximum 3 ice/snow sculptors are invited for participation in the Contest. Participants are provided with all necessary materials as well as free accommodation and board. Transport costs are covered by the sending party. Prizes are awarded in three nominations: Snow sculpture, Ice sculpture and Small snow sculpture (made by youngsters).

The Contest Regulations and the Application form are enclosed.

The brightest event of the Festival is the spectacular closing ceremony with stage performance on Saturday February 17th.

On Sunday February 18th the citizens and guests can take part in the traditional Russian holiday – Maslennitsa – the Carnival. Different entertainments and a lot of pancakes will be offered to the public.

Within the Festival time Petrozavodsk and it’s French sister-city La Rochelle will celebrate 45-years jubilee of sister-relations. The Jubilee program will include a number of informational and cultural events; the French guests will take part in the Winter Carnival, enjoy the Ice and Snow sculptures contest, visit friends and meet Russian culture.
